Carousell expands to Australia

Shortly after raising US$35 million in a funding round led by Rakuten Ventures, Singapore-based online marketplace Carousell has expanded to Australia.

Launched in 2012, the Carousell app lets people buy and sell goods including beauty products, fashion, lifestyle gadgets, furniture and home appliances. Sellers upload photos of items they are selling while buyers contact them via chat.

Already, Carousell team has surpassed 1 million listings in Australia. It has been averaging 20 per cent month-on-month growth internationally (it is in five countries), with more than 41 million listings and almost 20 million transactions.

Australia’s eCommerce market has been tipped to exceed $24 billion by 2018, and a new Nielsen study has shown that about one in four consumers shop online weekly.

One of Carousell’s three founders, Siu Rui Quek, says the company is also establishing a physical presence in Australia with the aim of delivering a “hyperlocal” product.

“For Australia, we have dedicated product and marketing staff with a team of two on the ground in Melbourne,” he says. “But we want to scale up that team, especially with the growth we’re seeing in the community, and we’re hoping to double it by early next year.”
