Cafe to feature Sanrio’s Gudetama

Sanrio’s cartoon egg yolk character Gudetama will soon have his own food outlet in Singapore.

A 2300 sqft (214 sqm) Gudetama Cafe will open at Suntec City on Wednesday.

“Gude” describes someone or something with no energy or strength, while “tama” is from the Japanese word tamago, which means egg.

The cafe is a partnership between home-grown cafe chains Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon. It will feature ceilings that look like waffles, as well as egg-shaped booths and chairs in the main dining area.

A separate dining space, focussing on desserts and drinks, will have a garden theme including a Gudetama fountain.
On the menu will be such dishes as “I’m Cold” smoked-salmon Benedict, “Rib-I Don’t Care” steak with mushroom sauce, and “Big Nua” breakfast ($25.90) with bacon, pork bratwurst, sauteed mushrooms, baked beans and toasted brioche.

Desserts will include Ta-Ma-Go, cakes that look like sushi, and a ramen-style dessert made with chocolate, and there will also be a takeaway section and merchandise area.

Singapore already has character-themed cafes including the Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Singapore at Changi Airport, Pompompurin Cafe at Orchard Central and pop-up Pokemon Cafe at Bugis Junction.
