UnionPay airport promotion takes off

China’s UnionPay has launched an upgraded campaign at 100 airports internationally, providing discounts and services at retail outlets.

Exclusive privileges and value-added services will be offered UnionPay cardholders at international airports across about 30 countries and regions until the end of next February.

The UnionPay airport promotion is one of a range of themed campaigns launched each year, which have included “Famous Business Districts” and “Selected Tourism Destinations”. It has also launched a cross-border marketing platform for mobile internet.

There are three highlights in the “Global Airports” campaign…

Firstly, it is more extensive. Participating airports include not only popular tourist destinations such as Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, North America, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Taiwan and the Middle East, but also Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines, Plaisance International Airport in Mauritius and Nadi International Airport in Fiji.

Secondly, the campaign covers more types of merchants and provides value-added services. As well as exclusive discounts at airport restaurants, bookstores and gift shops, it offers such privileges as VIP lounge access, airport shuttle bus, car rental and tax refunds.

Thirdly, the exclusive privileges of mobile QuickPass and U Plan have been made available in the Chinese Corner at Melbourne Airport, Relay Book Store at New Zealand Airport and food streets at five airports in Taiwan. Also, King Power at four airports in Thailand, JR Duty Free at eight airports in Australia and New Zealand, and Travel Pharm at three airports in New Zealand offer special discounts for U Plan users.

UnionPay has expanded to more than 160 countries and regions outside Mainland China, with more than 20 million merchants and 1.3 million ATMs accepting UnionPay cards.
