Imminent opening for Mi Home store in India

China’s Xiaomi is about to open its first standalone Mi Home store in India.

The shop will be opened in the city of Bengaluru, in Karnataka, by Xiaomi India MD Manu Jain, who was also recently appointed as the company’s group VP.

Xiaomi is ramping up its retail store network across Asia after realising its online-only business model was not enough to make substantial inroads in some highly competitive Asian markets, and to boost awareness of its non-phone products. It has just signed a partner in the Philippines, where physical stores will open in a matter of months, and it plans to open 200 brick-and-mortar stores across China this year, where it currently has just 80.  Singapore’s first Mi Home store opened last October.

While Xiaomi is best-known regionally to date for its Mi-branded smartphones, the company has a growing portfolio of other gadgets ranging from headphones and air purifiers to robotic vacuum cleaners and flat screen TVs.

Xiaomi made its debut in India in 2014 with smartphones and a tablet. The country is now its second largest market despite an absence of physical retail stores. Tech media in India have reported Xiaomi is now second in the market in handset sales to Samsung, with a market share of around 30 per cent.
