Chinese online shopping growth eases

Chinese online shopping growth slowed in the second quarter, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

But the year-on-year increase is still massive.

Online retail sales topped RMB394 billion in April, which represents 24 per cent growth over the same month last year, but slower than the 33 per cent rate of March.

As usual, the bureau did not provide any explanation of the figures, however an analyst with Nomura said the slowdown appears to have come from the cosmetics, home appliances, communications and auto categories.

Online sales of apparel and food and beverages maintained their growth momentum during the month, up 8.1 per cent and 11.8 per cent, respectively.
