Satisfaction with Macau shopping, dining hits 11-year high

Satisfaction has hit an 11-year high for Macau shopping and dining.

Run by the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) of the Macau University of Science and Technology, the latest Macao Consumer Satisfaction Index reveals a satisfaction rate of 74.3 per cent for shopping by local residents, up 4.5 points from last year.

Satisfaction with restaurants reached 70.9 per cent, up 1.6 points.

ISD says both increases are the highest for 11 years.

All three indicators of satisfaction with shopping increased – quality of products (74.6 per cent), service (73.3 per cent) and value for money (73.2 per cent).

Similarly for restaurants, all indicators rose – quality of food (71.1 per cent), service (71 per cent) and value for money (69 per cent).

The survey also addressed the satisfaction of local consumers at shops and restaurants in Zhuhai, just across the border in Mainland China.

Satisfaction with shopping there dropped 1.5 points year-on-year, standing at 65.5 per cent, while satisfied diners grew by five points to reach 69.5 per cent.

ISD says the difference in ratings between restaurants in Macau and Zhuhai has narrowed from 3.6 points for 2015 and 2016 to 1.4 points this year. In particular, more residents think the amount they paid for meals in restaurants in Macau is higher than it should be. Survey results show the value-for-money rating of local restaurants is lower than for restaurants in Zhuhai.

The period of the survey spanned May 4 to 23, with 810 local respondents.
