Dover Street Market Singapore debuts at Dempsey Hill

Dover Street Market Singapore has launched at the Dempsey Hill retail/dining complex.

It is a collaboration with Dover Street Market – launched in London in 2004 and now in Tokyo New York and Beijing – and luxury retailer Club 21, which has boutiques across Southeast Asia, Australia, China and Japan.

A nutmeg plantation in the 1850s, the grounds became a military camp during World War II, and following a string of transformations is now shopping and hospitality complex with a strong boutique feel, reports CPP-Luxury.

In a former army barracks, the store has a pavilion-like structure covering 12,325 sqft (1145 sqm) with a ceiling that reaches more than 10m at its highest. Similar to other Dover Street Market stores, the Singapore addition offers different settings, each adapted to a brand or product range.

Dover Street Market is the concept of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, who founded Comme des Garcons in 1973 and is responsible for the overall interior design of all the market outlets.

“I want to create a kind of market where creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos; the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,” she says.

Colourful arches

In the middle of the space is a colourful hut-like structure, which is a feature common to each Dover Street Market store worldwide. Colourful arches, with a lighting design by Paris-based designer Thierry Dreyfus, contrast with rows of black beams that were part of the original architecture.

Other architectural highlights include two glass-and-steel structures housing the main collections of Comme des Garcons.

An area named the Wire Fence Labyrinth is flanked by steel mesh walls, showcasing womenswear pieces from the likes of Jacquemus, JW Anderson, Molly Goddard and Vetements. Menswear is presented inside a series of freestanding metallic towers, while a cavernous wall surrounds the brand’s Good Design Shop, reports DeZeen.

Launching at the Dover Street Market, the Nikelab Singapore outlet makes its Southeast Asian debut. It joins nine locations worldwide, including Hong Kong and Shanghai, and is a showcase for innovation and collaborations, reports Hype. Limited editions are available.

NikeLab Singapore features NikeLab X Pigalle’s newest capsule collection, in which founder Stéphane Ashpool portrays the evolution of ’90s basketball in his ongoing collaboration with the brand.

To mark the launch of Dover Street Market, specially created items are offered including t-shirts by Gosha Rubchinskiy, Gucci x Dover Street Market pre-fall special pieces, and Nike x Dover Street Market vintage re-edition tees.
