Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday retail sales in Shanghai rose 10.7 per cent year on year, driven by spending in department stores and shopping malls, says the Shanghai Commission of Commerce.
A sample of 400 major retailers and restaurants in Shanghai showed they had sales totalling RMB11.16 billion (US$1.6 billion) during the eight-day holiday.
While sales dropped at convenience stores, the commission says sales were up for department stores, malls, supermarkets and specialty stores.
Eight major shopping malls in Shanghai saw their sales grow by more than 20 per cent.
