Sam’s Club China expands JD.com partnership

Sam’s Club China and JD.com’s JD Logistics have expanded their partnership to offer online-to-offline (O2O) delivery of fresh produce and frozen products to consumers in China.

The new service, which premiered in Beijing in August and Shanghai in September, provides same-day delivery of more than 300 fresh and frozen items, including imported meats, seafood, ice cream and fruits, and local delicacies like fresh Qingyuan chicken and luxury bakery goods.

Sam’s Club, Walmart’s high-end membership-only club, has seen its e-commerce sales increase threefold in China since launching its flagship store on JD.com one year ago.

The new O2O offline fulfillment service relies on sophisticated deep frozen, frozen, chilled and cold-chain delivery and monitoring solutions. JD Logistics collects orders from physical Sam’s Club China stores and uses US FDA-approved fourth-generation cool storage boxes to ensure that every fresh item is delivered at the right temperature and in perfect condition. The temperature of these boxes is monitored in real time, 24 hours a day, during storage, transportation and delivery.

Sam’s Club - JD

During the past year, consumers in China have been able to order imported and local items, including fresh and frozen foods, from the flagship Sam’s Club on JD.com. The store initially offered 10 product categories, but now carries a full range of more than 2000 imported and local items, including the popular Members Mark private label products. Members in China can also access Sam’s Club on JD Worldwide to select from a wide variety of merchandise from Sam’s Club US, comprising mostly of renowned global brands and popular overseas items not yet available at Sam’s Clubs in China. Shoppers enjoy top-quality authentic products, a convenient shopping experience and fast delivery via JD Logistics without ever having to leave home.

Sam’s Club - Frozen storage

With 19 physical clubs in 16 cities in China and the JD.com and JD Worldwide stores, Sam’s serves over 1.8 million members China-wide. More than 20 per cent of Sam’s orders on JD.com now include fresh or frozen items, with Australian beef, Members Mark ice cream and imported seafood among the top sellers.

The new fresh food service adds value to the existing logistics services offered by JD Logistics for Sam’s members. Walmart’s partnership with the Chinese online retailer has allowed Sam’s Club to expand its reach to the majority of the nation via JD Logistics’ sophisticated delivery and warehouse infrastructure.

JD Logistics has built specialised all-in-one Sam’s warehouses in cities throughout China. These exclusive facilities provide storage and delivery, including cold-chain delivery, along with real-time warehouse and logistics management on a 24×7 basis. Sam’s items are shipped directly to these dedicated warehouses for nationwide distribution by JD Logistics. This is the first time that JD Logistics has provided such a service to a partner.

JD VP of logistics Tang Wei says JD is creating smarter solutions to deliver on the promise of a ‘seamless shopping experience’ with an open platform based on JD Logistics infrastructure, technology and services.
