Hong Kong Customs seized counterfeit sunglasses after a tip-off they were being sold on a social media platform.

While the platform was not identified it is believed to be either Facebook or WeChat.

Customs officers conducted an operation this week in in Ngau Tau Kok during which about 75 suspected counterfeit sunglasses with an estimated market value of $37,000 were located.

The raid took place at a storage unit being used by an internet wholesaler.

A 44-year-old man was arrested and investigations are continuing.

A Customs spokesman reminded traders to be “cautious and prudent” in merchandising, since selling infringing goods is a serious crime and offenders will face criminal liability.

“Customs also appeals to consumers to procure items at reputable shops and to check with trademark owners or copyright owners or their authorised agents if the authenticity of a product is in doubt.”

Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who sells or possesses for sale any goods with a forged trademark commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
