With Hong Kong as its third stop, the Chanel Mademoiselle Privé Exhibition has taken on a technological dimension via a smartphone app.
Firstly, the app allows users to book time slots for admission, register for workshops and receive exhibition updates. As users walk through the exhibition, the app provides details of each installation through a series of videos.
A special highlight, at the Haute Couture section, shows Gabrielle Chanel at work at her Rue Cambon workshop when users point the phone’s camera at a door marked “Mademoiselle Privé”, a sign the designer would display when she didn’t want to be disturbed while working.
There is also a series of podcasts about creation specially recorded for the Hong Kong exhibition.
Following on from London and Seoul, the exhibition aims to capture the charismatic personality and irreverent spirit of Gabrielle Chanel and the brand’s head creative director Karl Lagerfeld, says Chanel.
Located inside the PMQ creative landmark, the event highlights the modernity of Mademoiselle Chanel’s creations, including the Chanel No. 5 fragrance, high jewellery and the re-edition of the the Bijoux de Diamants collection designed by Gabrielle Chanel in 1932.
Covering two floors, the exhibition has seven sections with a total of 17 exhibits.
Highlights of the exhibition include the entrance, a blackened replica of the Rue Cambon Gabrielle Chanel boutique from 100 years ago, a 3D-created red garden featuring commissioned artworks by Hong Kong artists SK Lam and Anothermountainman, a journey through Haute Couture and Visite Nocturne, a short film presenting a conversation between Karl Lagerfeld and the late Gabrielle Chanel.
With free admission, the exhibition runs through until February 10. Workshops cover high jewellery, Lemarié feather and flower creation, and Chanel No. 5.
A VIP opening party was attended by celebrities Kaia Gerber and Park Shin-hye, as well as Chanel ambassador Pharrell Williams, who performed during the event.
