OldTown Coffee takeover given green light

Singapore’s competition watchdog has given the green light to Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) taking over Malaysian cafe chain and coffee manufacturer OldTown.

The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) says the transaction will not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the supply of instant coffee and milk-tea mixes for home consumption.

The global coffee company owns brands in nearly 30 countries, as well as Super Group, which makes more than 160 instant food and beverage products. OldTown makes coffee and other beverages, and runs cafes under the OldTown White Coffee brand.

While the two firms overlap in the supply of instant coffee and milk-tea mixes, the CCS says they face competition from several suppliers while barriers to entry and expansion are relatively low.
