Alibaba affiliate Ant Financial has opened an unmanned clothing shop in Hong Kong to help promote its mobile payments services.

The pop-up store, located in Olympian City, also features a robot that serves coffee to visitors.

Customers face a two-stage process to enter the store, first having their face scanned which generates a QR code on a screen at the door. After scanning the QR code with their smartphone, they gain access to the shop and can purchase products using QR codes.

Ant Financial wants to encourage more Hongkongers to use cashless payments, including its own Alipay. Adoption of such technology is low in Hong Kong, compared to across the border, partly because of the convenience and widespread use of the Octopus Card, which has expanded beyond its core public transport use into cafes, shops and even online shopping.
