Osaka Bake Cheese Tart store wins interior design award

Japanese bakery goods retailer Bake Cheese Tart Abeno Harukas Shop has won Retail Interior of the Year from Dezeen Awards for its galvanised metal store designed by Fumitaka Suzuki.

The Osaka store is “designed to evoke the heat and scent of the freshly baked cheese tarts that it sells”, according to a feature in Dezeen. Cheese tarts are made for sale on site in full view of customers.

Suzuki explained “We felt that rather than shouting in the hustle-bustle to gain the attention of customers, the shop would actually stand out if it remained in tranquility like a temple, attracting attention to the products. A glass wall was installed to divide the shop from the surrounding environment, and a symbolic ringed hole was provided in only the area where customers are served.”

According to designer, the store stands in a part of the city known for metal factories and temples. Suzuki was inspired by this history and designed the store with the hope of triggering interest in the region as well as the product.
