Japanese burger chain Mos opens Hong Kong concept store

Japanese burger chain Mos Food Services has opened its first overseas Japan-themed outlet in Hong Kong.

The Mos Cafe, which opened this month in Amoy Plaza shopping mall in Kowloon Bay, is specifically tailored to embrace Japanese tastes – from employee uniforms and interiors to ingredients and packaging.

While Mos has opened its stores across Asia, offering a quirky assortment of healthy hamburgers and sides and a typically Japanese-style, minimalist environment, this new concept has yet to be tried outside Japan.

Mos Food Hong Kong Ltd says its menu will trial Japanese dishes, such as the Tendon Rice Burger, (tempura between rice buns) from today, priced at HK$30.

Mos launched in Hong Kong in 2006 and now has 25 outlets in the territory. It operates 1321 stores in Japan and 370 in eight foreign markets, including Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. Overseas sales account for 21 per cent of the group’s total sales.

The new Kowloon Mos Cafe features a salad bar and roasted coffee, both firsts for the Hong Kong stores.

Meanwhile, Mos says it is looking to open in new countries in Asia.

“We will explore markets where we have yet to advance, like Vietnam,” Jun Takifuka, GM of Mos Food’s international headquarters, said in an interview.
