Singapore’s Christmas on a Great Street theme, program unveiled

Singapore’s Christmas on a Great Street theme for this year, and its program, have been revealed by the Orchard Road Business Association (Orba).

This year’s theme will be “The Greatest Gift” and Orba will partner with Community Chest to hold a Light Up Ceremony officiated over by president Halimah Yacob at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on the event’s first day.

“The theme of this year’s Light Up, from the carefully curated program to the decorative set pieces, underscores the true spirit of Christmas,” said Orba chairman Mark Shaw. “We hope to create joyful memories for all residents and visitors as they enjoy their time on Orchard Road this festive season.”

The boulevard from Tanglin Mall to Plaza Singapure will be covered with vibrant festive lights featuring Orba’s new Christmas icons, ‘Santas’.

The Great Christmas Village will pop up at three venues on Orchard Road, including Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza; *Scape, Grange Road Car Park and Shaw House Urban Plaza. It will feature more than 30 amusement rides and game booths, as well as food trucks, musical performances and other activities.

Christmas on A Great Street 2019 will run from November 16 to January 1. It is the 36th to be held and the 11th edition since Orba took it over in 2009.

Last year’s Disney theme for Christmas on a Great Street was criticised by the National Council of Churches of Singapore saying that the true meaning of the Christian festival had been buried under a “extensive and sophisticated brand promotion exercise”.
