Thailand’s Central Retail has collaborated with Alipay to launch the Phuket Island Card campaign, offering promotions at more than 100 outlets in Phuket.
With Phuket Island Card, Chinese customers and Alipay users can receive deals when shopping in Central Retail’s stores, including discounts ranging from BTH150 (US$5) to BTH366 ($12), and free coupons available in Alipay application.
“Phuket Island Card will help increase sales among Chinese tourists and restore Thailand’s economy including local capital, especially in tourist attraction areas where a lot of income is generated such as Phuket, and the campaign will also promote vigorous tourism,” said Nicolo Galante, president of Central Retail.
GM of Alipay Thailand, Sittipong Kittiprapapong, said the partnership with Central Retail will enhance Chinese tourists’ shopping experience in Phuket.
Quoting data from Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sport, Central Retail says the country gained more than 500 billion-baht (US$16.5 billion) from Chinese tourists, about a quarter of all international tourism revenue. Chinese tourists spend around 120,000 million Baht specifically on shopping, equals to 41 per cent of their total spending.
Alipay has more than 1 billion users around the world, 700 million of whom uses the payment system every month. Eighty per cent of Chinese tourists use Alipay at restaurants, tourist attractions and shopping centres.
