Sunway Malls responds to Malaysian stimulus package

Sunway Malls has released a response to the Malaysian government’s RM20 billion (US$4.75 billion) stimulus package to ease the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19).

While congratulating the government on the “well-balanced and well-thought package”, the official response signed by Sunway Malls & Theme Parks CEO HC Chan also expressed the view that savings from the package’s 15-per-cent electricity discount should be “ploughed back to encourage more consumer spending through marketing programmes, shoppers’ rewards, tenants’ vouchers adoption and free parking to create a multiplier effect”.

The statement also unveiled Sunway Malls’ RM5 million ($1.2 million) marketing programme, released in conjunction with the unveiling of the stimulus package. The sales-driven campaign is intended to stimulate consumer spending, benefitting retailers and consumers alike throughout the firm’s portfolio of seven malls.

Sunways’ statement suggested that domestic tourism presents a viable business opportunity at a time when international travel has dropped off, and called for further initiatives to drive local consumption.
