Shoppers have retuned in droves to Macau’s casino-linked shopping malls – but this time the foot traffic is all local.
With no international visitors travelling to Macau for several months due to the Covid-19 outbreak, retailers have had to rely on locals for custom. This has been helped in recent days by the issuance of vouchers redeemable at stores.
Retail sales in Macau fell by 45.1 per cent in the first quarter of this year, to US$1.41 billion.
Malls associated with Macau’s casinos have been implementing support programs for retailers affected by the lack of customers, with some stores granted retail waivers for three months.
