Le Labo opens its first China store, in Shanghai

Estee Lauder’s upmarket fragrance brand Le Labo has opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Mainland China at Shanghai’s Xintiandi.

The two-storey retail space retains the Shanghainese architecture style Shikumen in the 1920s while highlighting the brand’s signature New York decoration.

The ground floor is home to the brand’s classic products, ranging from fragrances, candles, body care and haircare to skincare items. Meanwhile, the second floor, which is reimagined as the perfumer’s workplace, showcases essential oils with ingredient labels and perfumery tools.

That floor also has a cafe that offers vegan coffee and baked goods. Le Labo Xintiandi is the brand’s second location in the world to house a cafe.

The store also features a lounge area where books about perfume, handmade creations, and lifestyle topics are displayed.

In contrast to other Le Labo stores, the Xintiandi store does not feature on-site fragrance-making workshops due to the country’s cosmetics regulations.

The launch of Le Labo’s first store in China was planned by the brand earlier this year.

Founded in New York in 2006 by Eddie Roschi and Fabrice Penot, Le Labo has 78 stores and more than 385 points of sale in more than 43 countries, according to WWD. The niche fragrance label was acquired by Estee Lauder in 2014.
