The sustainable fashion design competition Redress Design Award has named Tiger Chung as this year’s winner, who will begin his career with Tommy Hilfiger.
Chung, whose design beat off nine others from Australia, France, Iran, Italy, Mainland China, Taiwan, the UK, and Vietnam, will join the Tommy Hilfiger team to work on a sustainable retail design project.
The Hong Kong-based designer created a competition collection called The Wanderer, which used waste materials from car seat covers and old sofas.
“Fashion is rightly criticised for its negative environmental impact, which is a huge concern for designers like myself. But we intend to change this – and make fashion better for the planet,” said Chung.
According to Redress, textile waste is expected to rise by around 60 per cent between 2015 and 2030. It is estimated that 80 per cent of a product’s environmental impact is established during the design process.
Earlier this year, Redress announced its partnership with Tommy Hilfiger, which coincides with the US fashion brand’s sustainability strategy with all products that will contribute to the circular economy by 2030, including design, use, and end-of-life.
