Line app gets into groceries

Social media and chat app Line is getting into the grocery retailing market with the launch of an online supermarket for Southeast Asia. Line, with 181 million monthly active users at the last count, will launch the supermarket service first in Thailand on February 4, reports TechInAsia.com. Aeon plans 500 Thai stores

Japanese retailer Aeon is planning to increase its supermarket network in Thailand to 500 outlets by 2020. But this year it has scaled back its expansion plans due to what it considers to be a subdued retail market. Marimekko to open two Asian flagships

Finnish homewares specialty retailer Marimekko is to open new flagship stores in Bangkok and Singapore. The move marks a continuation of a concerted push into the Asia-Pacific region. Pizza Hut Thailand plans to double its store network within five years. In an exclusive interview with The Nation newspaper, the new GM of Pizza Hut Thailand, Sabina Rizvi, says the company has a five year strategic plan to double its current 97-strong network and to achieve double digit profit growth. “We want to more than double the number of our Pizza Hut stores in Thailand in the next five years. Thai chain plans 100 new cafes

Thai coffee chain Doi Chaang is to open about 100 new franchised cafes across the nation this year, cashing in on growing consumer demand for premium coffee. It also plans further expansion in the Asean region, where it currently has 10 branches in Malaysia, one in Myanmar and one in Indonesia. A second will open in Myanmar this year along with a first cafe in Laos. Thai company Berli Jucker’s plan to buy German Metro Group’s Vietnam unit has stalled after shareholders voted down the necessary resolution at an extraordinary meeting.
