A premium ramen noodle restaurant chain is set for an overseas roll-out sponsored by a Japanese government entrepreneurial fund. Cool Japan Fund, which currently has 100 billion yen in its kitty with which to sponsor Japanese companies expanding offshore, will invest 2 billion yen (US$16.51 million) in Fukuoka-based Chikaranomoto Holdings which runs 120 Ippudo-branded ramen restaurants in Japan and mainly Asian cities already. The owner of India’s largest quick service restaurant chain says it is scouting for opportunities in key overseas markets including Sydney, New York and Singapore. Spring Leaf Retail owns India’s Mast Kalandar, described as the developing nation’s largest QSR chain. Singapore jeweler The Hour Glass is tipped to open a multi-storey luxury watch store on a core Sydney retail site. Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo is set to open its doors in Sydney this spring/summer. The store will be located at the heart of Pitt Street Mall – Sydney’s most popular shopping and fashion precinct.
