JD Logistics, a global technology-driven logistics provider and part of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, which has been working with Polish multi-brand sports retailer Sportano since 2023 to support its omnichannel growth, recently announced a 200 per cent increase in the fast-growing business’s warehouse operational efficiency. Sportano stands out as a comprehensive destination for sports enthusiasts, as it offers an extensive range of sporting equipment, apparel and accessories. As a digit
digital-first retailer, the company is expanding its reach across Europe with its online platform, complemented by its physical location in Warsaw, Poland, which was launched in 2022.
The retailer’s growth and need for omnichannel logistics was the catalyst for the collaboration with JD Logistics. The partnership addresses the logistical challenges of managing a varied inventory of over 100,000 product types.
JD Logistics oversaw the deployment of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) equipped with flexible and interchangeable storage receptacles, coupled with an independently developed intelligent Warehousing Control System (WCS).
This approach has enabled efficient management of Sportano’s inventory, accommodating seasonal fluctuations and streamlining both direct-to-consumer and business-to-business orders.
The collaboration
According to Mengyao Chen, director of international business development at JD Logistics’ innovation lab JDL-X, the diversity and volume of Sportano’s range of products necessitated a sophisticated inventory management system that can effectively manage the supply chain.
“The challenges are compounded by the significant variance in product sizes. Our logistical operations must accommodate items as small as fishing hooks and gloves, and as large as skis and tents,” he told Inside Retail.
Chen went on to explain that the sports goods market is highly seasonal, with demand for specific products peaking during certain times of the year. For instance, ski equipment sees reduced demand outside of winter months.
“This seasonality aspect requires dynamic inventory management and storage solutions to ensure optimal space utilisation and inventory accuracy throughout the year,” he said.
Furthermore, Sportano’s business model, which encompasses both online and bricks-and-mortar sales, introduces the necessity for omnichannel fulfilment.
“JD Logistics’ central warehouse plays a pivotal role in achieving nearly 100 per cent order fulfilment efficiency, dispatching goods to a variety of destinations across Europe to meet diverse customer needs,” he added.
Details matter
The 200 per cent increase in operational efficiency is mainly due to the AGVs that can navigate the intricacies of a warehouse environment, autonomously transport goods and streamline the inventory management process.
The team recognised early on that the diverse product range and seasonal shifts in the inventory required a more flexible approach to storage and retrieval, so the AGVs have versatile and interchangeable storage containers on top-mounted shelves.
“This customisation allows for the storage of a variety of product types, from the smallest accessories to larger equipment, and facilitates quick adaptation to the changing inventory needs between seasons,” he noted.
Additionally, at the software level, a self-developed intelligent warehousing control system coordinates with the warehouse management system, enabling the consolidation and unified shipment of goods from both the manual and AGV areas.
According to Chen, as the sports retail industry requires a more dynamic response, JD’s strategy hinged on customised automation that adapts to different scenarios, which significantly cut handling costs and enhanced efficiency.
“This approach not only facilitated adept inventory management for Sportano but also enabled them to nimbly navigate the ebbs and flows of seasonal demands and streamline their order processing,” he stressed.
The future
Chen believes that the collaboration with Sportano represents a transformative step in the sports retail sector, marrying advanced logistics with the nuanced needs of the sports retail sector.
“This partnership is showcasing the power of tailored, intelligent systems that streamline inventory management and respond agilely to the pulse of market demand, season by season,” he opined.
As these innovations permeate the industry, Chen foresees a ripple effect. Retailers will likely seek to replicate the operational efficiencies and the adaptability that its solutions have delivered.
“The implementation of intelligent material handling solutions, capable of significant improvements in operational efficiency, is a harbinger of a more agile, responsive supply chain,” he explained.
Chen said that the impact of its work with Sportano goes beyond immediate operational gains; it points to a future where logistics are not just a backend operation but a strategic enabler of retail competitiveness.
“As we integrate 5G, artificial intelligence and internet of things into our logistics solutions, the entire sports retail sector stands to benefit from a framework that is not only more efficient but also aligned with the fast-paced nature of the retail world,” he concluded.
