The Sham Shui Po closure leaves just two Sincere branches in Hong Kong

One of Sincere Department Store’s remaining locations in Hong Kong has closed after three decades of business. The closure of the Sham Shui Po branch in Kowloon, Hong Kong, means The Sincere Company has just two sites left in Hong Kong, at Central and Mong Kok.

Founded in 1900, The Sincere Company is one of Hong Kong’s oldest retail groups. It was the first Chinese-owned department store to operate in Hong Kong.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) said shoppers filled the Sham Shui Po store on January 4, its final day in operation. A note in the store read: “We have gone through three decades of good times with many warm stories… It’s a pity we can no longer continue this journey.”

In the six months ending June 30, The Sincere Company recorded a revenue of HK$63.3 million, falling from HK$65 million in the six months prior. It recorded a loss of HK$26.4 million.

The SCMP added that Sincere was a pioneer in Hong Kong retail, becoming the first store to hire female shop assistants.
