Fred Segal expands into Japan

Fred Segal will take its Southern California heritage to Japan next year.

Sandow, the company which owns Fred Segal, and Mark Styler have formed a partnership to open Fred Segal stores in Japan beginning next year. The deal marks the first time in more than 50 years that the Fred Segal name has been used outside of its original Los Angeles locations.

As part of the agreement, Mitsubishi Corporation Fashion will manufacture Fred Segal-branded products for distribution in the Japanese market.

The first standalone store will be opened in September 2013 in Tokyo. The store will bring together a mix of luxury and products from both independent brands and Fred Segal-branded merchandise, and will be a platform for emerging, up-and-coming designers both locally and internationally. The location will also feature a salon, spa and more, much like the original emporiums in Los Angeles.

The Tokyo debut will be followed by several additional locations in other key Japanese cities, including both standalone stores and branded boutiques within high-end department stores.

“The Japanese level of sophistication when it comes to fashion/lifestyle brands, coupled with their understanding and appreciation for the authenticity and appeal of Fred Segal, made us focus on this market first,” said Sandow.

Fred Segal is synonymous with LA style and casual chic, attracting celebrities and locals alike with its array of shop-in-shop boutiques, which offer a curated selection of merchandise that varies from designer shoes and bags, to jeans and tees.
