Kate Spade Saturday debuts in Tokyo

Kate Spade Saturday has opened its first international freestanding store in Tokyo, Japan.

The glass-facade store on Cat St in the Omotesando district spans 2420 sqft and is brightly colored in sunny yellow, the brand’s signature hue.

According to Kyle Andrew, brand director of Kate Spade Saturday, Japan is Kate Spade’s second-largest market after the US, making it the ideal debut market for Kate Spade Saturday. The brand has high recognition among Japanese, hence, the decision to capitalise in the country, she says.

“It’s sending a signal about who we want to be. We want to be known to be forward. We want people to get excited about it,” said Andrew.

“The Japanese are known for being very forward and kind of modern in their tastes,” she said.

The company plans to open Kate Spade Saturday stores inside department stores and malls in Japan in the coming weeks. It is also eyeing other Asian markets, however has no solid plan as yet, said Andrew.

The brand will be introduced in the US through e-commerce while the company is looking for a location where it could open its first store; Andrew says it would be possibly Los Angeles or New York.

Brazil will also be an international market with an e-commerce store first, then a physical store in São Paulo.

“We just see huge opportunity in so many of our international markets,” said Andrew.
