Singaporeans embrace Black Friday

Singapore’s largest online retailer has reported a doubling of sales year-on-year over the Thanksgiving-Black Friday period.

Qoo10 – which has 1.5 million registered users – said it sold goods worth $4.8 million over the four days from November 27 to December 1 with trading on December 1 setting a new daily record of $1.05 million.

Year-on-year, orders for all seven products segments increased by at least 60 per cent: Fashion & Clothing rose 63 per cent), Beauty & Sports by 67 per cent, Digital & Mobile 81 per cent, Living & Autos 87 per cent, Baby & Food 103 per cent, Books & Music 132 per cent and Deals & Entertainment by 282 per cent.

The best-selling product categories by volume were Fashion & Clothing, accounting for 31 per cent of all sales, Digital & Mobile 21 per cent, Beauty & Sports 18 per cent, Living & Autos 13 per cent and Baby & Food 12 per cent.

Despite fewer orders being placed, the Digital & Mobile category trumped the Fashion & Clothing segment in value, accounting for 30 per cent of overall sales due to a higher merchandise retail price.

Singaporeans clearly enjoy shopping on their mobiles, which accounted for 55.5 per cent of total orders made, with PCs accounting for the balance.

“We can see that more Singaporeans are shopping online during Black Friday & Cyber Weekend this year and that the sale season is no longer confined to Western markets alone,” said a Qoo10 spokesman.
