British toy retailer expands in India

British toy retailer Hamleys will open its first store in New Delhi in May 2012, the retailer’s third in India after Mumbai and Chennai.

Hamleys, measuring 20,000 sqft, will open in DLF Place Mall in Saket. The flagship store will sell its own wide range of toys including radio control, preschool construction, musical instruments, dolls, board games and others. The store will also feature locally made toys.

“We look primarily at catering to customers in the age group of up to 14 years. We are however also happy to attend to the needs of customers across the spectrum. You will find young adults and even adults playing away merrily in Hamleys experiential toy retail destination stores,” said Sudhir Pai, VP and head of Hamleys India.

Hamleys also plans to open second store in Mumbai and New Delhi and flagship store in Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad next year.

Hamleys was founded by Cornishman William Hamley in 1760 and is operating in India through partnership with Indian company Reliance Retail.
