Caffe Habitu to beef up presence

Hong Kong has a new coffee chain giant in the making.

Liu Wai-fun, who comes from a family that owns Liu Chong Hing Bank and founder and chairwoman of Italian cafe chain Caffe Habitu, are planing to ramp up brand awareness of the Habitu brand in Hong Kong where major rivals include America’s Starbucks and Hong Kong-based, yet US-inspired, Pacific Coffee.

Instead of maximising each outlet’s space by increasing seating capacity, she set up larger tables to attract professionals like architects, lawyers and designers as customers.

She believes enhancing customers’ experiences will build loyalty and repeat business.

“From the start, I imagined Habitu as Hong Kong’s own version of the Italian coffee experience. That meant we shouldn’t maximise seating capacity but enhance the customer experience,” she said.

Liu, who developed an interest in the coffee business when she studied design and architecture in Italy, is seeking potential partners for her plans to expand in the mainland and neighbouring countries.

“I’m looking for a partner with a genuine commitment to, and understanding of, the Habitu experience of a genuinely good cup of coffee before considering any expansion” Liu said.

Currently, Caffe Habitu is teaming up with GOD, a retail chain created by Douglas Young which offers contemporary furniture, homeware and lifestyle accessories.

Caffe Habitu has 24 outlets across Hong Kong, averaging monthly revenues of HK$1.5 million (US$193,408) each.
