Spar to boost Indian presence

Amsterdam-based food retail chain Spar is seeking new local partners for its expansion plans in India.

“We are exploring new partnerships for expanding presence in India, especially in the eastern and southern regions,” Spar International MD Gordon Campbell said.

Spar has currently 10 stores in seven Indian cities through a joint venture with Max Hypermarkets India, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Landmark Group.

“We have had a great response for our retail stores in India and it is quite heartening that majority of these outlets are profitable. A few new ones will enjoy that status after completing six months of business from the time of their launch,” said Campbell.

Joint ventures in Russia and China have brought success to Spar, and the company aims to replicate the results in India.

Spar has about 12,500 stores spread across 34 countries worldwide.
