Philippines theme mall makeover

In a bid to meet the growing affluent market in Alabang, an upscale suburb south of metro Manila, Festival Supermall will be modernised and expanded.

The Philippines’ only theme mall and one of its largest is owned and operated by Filinvest Development Corporation which will invest 3.5 billion pesos (US$82.08 million) on the makeover.

“The sprawling 20-hectare four-storey mall will have to expand and modernise after 15 years in operation to cater to its growing clientele and to catch the expanding affluent market in the south,” Danilo Antonio, MD of Filinvest Alabang said.

Festival Supermall will get an additional 10 hectares, transforming it into a 30-hectare sprawling shopping and entertainment mecca.

The makeover will see additional attractions such as a River Park which features an amphitheater and water activities, Festival Walk with ‘grab-and-go’ kiosks and Water Gardens where a three-storey mall, al fresco dining and outdoor garden plazas and fountains will be housed.

Antonio said they are expecting 700 tenants in the expanded area.

“What we are trying to do is to capture the A, B market and the upper C market. The expansion area should be like the Greenbelt type of development,” said Antonio.

Festival Supermall currently has more than 700 tenants comprising shops and food outlets, along with a 10 screen cinema complex and 2300 parking spaces.
