Malaysia mall officially green

Setia City Mall has received Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Gold Award.

It is the first mall to receive such accreditation in Malaysia and recognises the new shopping centre’s sustainability initiatives, which meet five evaluation criteria including energy and water efficiency, environment protection, indoor air quality and innovation.

A 50/50 joint venture between Lend Lease and S P Setia, the new retail destination is set to open in May 2012 and will house over 230 local and international retailers, a 10.5 acre park, and will feature alfresco dining facilities and an entertainment precinct. Retailers include Parkson, Golden Screen Cinemas, Wangsa Bowl, Fitness First, Zara and Harvey Norman.

Key green initiatives include a high efficiency air-conditioning system, implementation of an integrated building energy management system, natural day light in the mall concourse and car park areas and energy efficient escalators and lifts.

Other environmentally friendly initiatives include a 20 per cent saving in water consumption thanks to efficient fixtures and fittings, rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation, low-emissivity glazing, bicycle parking bays and bio-composting of organic food waste. In addition, all waste generated during the mall’s construction was logged and diverted for reuse or recycling.

Setia City Mall is also committed to social sustainability and will play an active role in the local community. A key initiative include a community waste recycling centre, which will be set up as a buy back centre to commit local residents to a sustained recycling program, thus reducing the waste that goes to landfill.

Robert Spinks, development director, Setia City Mall, said the award reflects the company’s hard work and dedication to sustainability has been recognised.

“Green Mark Gold accreditation is a significant achievement and we are certain that our future customers will share in the joy of knowing they are choosing a responsible place to shop.”

Setia City Mall is located at the heart of Malaysian property developer S P Setia’s 4,000 acre Setia Alam township. The mall will facilitate the rapid expansion of one of the fastest growing development hotspots in Malaysia.

Greenhill Resources is a joint venture between Malaysian property developer S P Setia and the Asian Retail Investment Fund (ARIF), managed by Lend Lease.

The mall is designed by Lend Lease in conjunction with Archicentre, KTA Tenaga Sdn Bhd and will be marketed and managed by Greenhill Resources Sdn Bhd.
