Spar expands in China

Netherlands-based supermarket chain Spar plans massive growth in China with 1000 stores planned over the next three years.

To support its ambitious expansion plans, Spar is now investing in distribution centres and the supply chain network in regional areas.

Its central management office in Shanghai is positioned to better connect with consumer goods companies across the mainland.

“We build Spar-branded stores and we have independent retailing stores which will join in the regional chain and can work with our regional partners,” said Spar China MD Tobias Wasmuht.

“We are investing in advanced distribution centers to enable regional partners to work with independent partner in different locations.”

The supermarket chain entered China in 2005. It now has 185 stores located in Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Guizhou province and another six provinces. Its global network counts 12,500 outlets in 34 countries around the world.
