Blackberry opens premium stores in India

Canada-based phone maker Research in Motion will increase the number of its Blackberry stores in India.

RIM India will open around 15 Blackberry premium stores there by the end of this year across top metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore. The premium stores will feature consumer and enterprise applications and a demo zone where features of Blackberry smartphones will be highlighted.

“These stores will offer holistic consumer experiences of Blackberry consumer and enterprise services,” said RIM India MD Sunil Dutt.

Research in Motion sees a strong customer demand among the youth population in India due to Blackberry’s messenger services. Data from IT research house CyberMedia says smartphone sales in India increased by 87 per cent to 11.2 million units last year.

RIM holds the third largest market share in India’s smartphone segment behind Nokia and Samsung.

Two of the 15 premium stores planned in India were launched recently in Delhi and Gurgaon. Blackberry currently has more than 5000 points of sale in India.
