Carl’s Jr returns to Thailand

Burger chain Carl’s Jr is returning to Thailand after a 10 year absence.

Carl’s Jr, through its franchisee R&R Restaurant Group, plans to develop a 25-strong restaurant network over the next five years.

The US fast food brand says it has tested the market by opening a store in Pattaya in June and the success of trading has prompted a commitment to a broader roll-out.

A second store will open on Sukhumvit Soi 24 this week in Bangkok. It plans to have five outlets trading the year’s end and another nine by next year.

Carl’s Jr offers salads, desserts and beverages as well as burgers and has more than 3000 outlets worldwide.

Carl’s Jr’s return to Thailand has encouraged rivals to expand in the market. Burger King says it will open five new outlets every year until 2017.

“There’s room to grow the hamburger business in the Thailand, as consumption remains low compared with other fast food categories, and there are few players in this segment,” said Prapat Siangjan, GM of Burger King Thailand.
