Media Markt goes online in China

German-based consumer electronics chain Media Markt is now selling products online in China.

Media Markt has opened an online store in China to tap the booming online shopping market there. The online store adds to the retailer’s seven brick and mortar stores in China and offers services such as product reservation, home delivery or pick up, extended warranties and online photo printing.

Frank Bussalb, CEO of Media Markt China, says the company is now completing its business model by combining the customer experience in store with online functionalities.

“We implemented our multi-channel strategy to supplement our existing stores already set up in Shanghai and to find more ways to serve local customers,” said Bussalb.

Media Markt opened its first store in China in 2010. It is owned by Media Saturn Holding which is in turn owned by German retail company Metro.

Online stores are seeing growth in China as more and more consumers seek convenience and competitive pricing.

Euromonitor data shows the consumer electronics market in China stood at 767.7 billion yuan in 2011 and is expected to continue its growth momentum.
