Dog-friendly cafe opens in Thailand

They say dog is man’s best friend so it seems right to pamper them – and now there’s a cafe in Thailand which does.

Coffee & Puppy on Chaen Watthana Rd in Bangkok is different from other cafe in the country. Here, people are not the most pampered ones… but their dogs.

Owners Thanasut Vudthivichai and Nantana Sukitjai opened the cafe after they saw the business booming in Korea.

“Our friends in Korea said dog cafes have been around for a long time ago but only started booming four or five years ago as people began having fewer children, owning more dogs instead,” said Vudthivichai.

The two invested 500,000 baht in establishing the 200 sqm cafe, which serves menus for dogs as well as owners.

“We see it as a dog restaurant that allows people to come in, not a coffee shop for people that allows dogs to come in,” he said.

“Everything here is aimed at dogs and letting them just hang out here.”

Coffee & Puppy also offers day and night care for dogs, and a consulting service with veterinarians will also be offered once or twice a month.

“It won’t be a clinic but rather a Q&A session. Often when you go see the vet, it means your dog is already sick, but what we’re doing is preventing the dogs from falling sick,” he said.

Seeing a growing number of customers, Coffee & Puppy plans to open two more branches shortly.

Dog cafes are also popular in the US and Japan.

“More and more people will own pets not just to be fashionable but because they really love them. Particularly in urban areas where people will have fewer children, dog cafes will become normal,” said Vudthivichai.
