Rebecca Minkoff eyes Asia

American designer Rebecca Minkoff sees tremendous opportunity in Asia after the success of its first store in Japan.

“We saw that there was tremendous opportunity. From the beginning here we thought consumers have really embraced our brand,” said Minkoff.

The designer, known for her luxury handbags, says Ginza store is aimed not only at locals but also Chinese tourists.

“It’s refreshing for a tourist to walk in and buy several pieces when they were thinking of one designer handbag. Here they can walk in and buy three for the same price,” she said.

Minkoff says she will open in China and South Korea in two to three years.

“We don’t have any plans ironed out but China is definitely one of the places that we’re very seriously targeting,” Minkoff said. “And we’re going to be opening stores in Korea, that’s already in the planning phase.”

Rebecca Minkoff, also popular for being a “sexy tomboy” brand, is distributed in 900 stores worldwide.
