Neiman Marcus to exit China

High-end department store and online retailer Neiman Marcus will close down its Chinese operations.

Neiman Marcus entered China in 2012 through partnership with Glamour Sales Holdings which runs the department store’s Chinese online store neimanmarcus.com.cn.

According to the company’s spokeswoman Gabrielle de Papp, the company will be closing its warehouse in China and all sales through the online store will be fulfilled by its website in the US.

The luxury market in China is experiencing a slowdown as authorities crack down on gifting, however, de Papp said the closure had more to do with Neiman’s change in business model rather than the market conditions.

It recently launched international shipping from the US.

“We think this is a better model,” she said.
