Topshop counts down to China opening

British high street apparel brand Topshop is in advanced discussions to open stores in mainland China.

Owner Sir Philip Green said his company Arcadia Group, which owns Topshop, is in negotiations with several parties to explore opportunities in mainland China.

Topshop, through collaboration with Lab Concept, a subsidiary of department store Lane Crawford, opened its first Hong Kong store in June on Queens Rd Central.

Topshop has re-signed with Kate Moss and Green said the model could be a key to break into China. Moss’ earlier partnership with Topshop began in 2007 and ended in 2010.

“We could use that as an opportunity to open 20 to 30 pop-up stores within department stores in China,” said Green.

Arcadia Group, whose brands also include Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Wallis and Evans, is Britain’s largest privately owned clothing retailer with more than 2500 outlets.
