J.Crew sets Asian agenda

US apparel retailer J.Crew plans to open its first standalone stores in Asia Pacific in May.

It says the first stores will be in Hong Kong – one a 3200 sqft retail space at IFC Mall and another 2100 sqft on On Lan Street at Central.

The expansion marks another step forward in the company’s goal to expand globally. In 2012, it launched its online shop to deliver to 100 countries. In the same year, it also forged a partnership with Lane Crawford to test the Hong Kong market.

“Hong Kong is a natural decision for us,” says Mickey Drexler, J.Crew’s CEO and chairman.

“It’s a city where people understand and respect the integrity of great style, great design and great creativity. There’s a level of energy that you don’t see in most cities.”

Founded in 1983, J.Crew has more than 277 stores, offering ready-to-wear, shoes, men’s apparel and accessories.
