Malaysian telco plans rapid expansion

Malaysian telecommunication company REDtone plans to take the fight for market share to Huawei.

Chinese mobile phone giant Huawei has pledged to open 600 outlets, including 100 full size stores in Malaysia this year, part of a plan to eventually dominate the mobile phone market.

Both companies aim to take advantage of the country’s increasing number of mobile phone users.

REDtone plans to open 100 premium stores this year in addition to its existing 20. It will also expand into East Malaysia, in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Overall, we are looking to open six premium stores in Sabah and maybe seven in Sarawak for this year,” said chief sales officer Ben Teh.

REDtone is bullish of its trading prospects after net profit soared 52 per cent year-on-year to 6 million ringgit ($1.8 million) in its second quarter to November 30.
