Australian cafe re-enters India

Australian chain Di Bella Coffee is to re-open in India – six months after it broke up with local partner Sachin Sabharwal.

Di Bella, without naming its new Indian partner, will open six stores in India by April.

Queensland-headquartered Di Bella had 14 stores in Mumbai and two in Hyderabad before its partnership with Sabharwal terminated in September 2013.

“By the end of 2014, we will have 10 outlets,” said Phillip Di Bella, director of Espresso Enterprises, the parent company.

The coffee chain said it is now ready to compete this time with local and foreign rivals including Starbucks with 34 stores in four cities, Cafe Coffee Day with more than 1500 stores and Barista Coffee with over 154 stores.

The UK’s Costa Coffee also plans to grow more its brand in India and is reported to be scouting for a new partner.
