Walmart shutters Chongqing store

Walmart has closed its store in the Chinese city of Chongqing.

Wamart says the store, on Nanbin Rd, has been unprofitable for long time. This is the first time Walmart has closed a store in Chongqing after entering the city 10 years ago.

Walmart has been closing Chinese stores that do not meet expectations – 10 stores were shuttered in November and December alone.

However, the company has reaffirmed it remains committed to the Chinese market with plans to open 110 new stores and distribution centres in China, adding new stores in third- and fourth-tier cities, remodelling 55 and 65 stores in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Yonghui is said to be in talks to fill the site vacated by Walmart.
