Ikea hits Korea

Swedish home retailer Ikea is finally opening its doors in Korea.

Ikea is currently constructing its first store in Gwangmyeong, a suburb of Seoul, scheduled to open later this year. The company says the store will include a restaurant and a family entertainment facilities.

And as a preparation to that, it is opening a 230 sqm pop-up running until the end of this month to promote and showcase the products.

Local furniture retailer Hanssem is bracing for the entry of Ikea by ramping up its presence. It recently opened its sixth store and plans to open 14 more in the near future.

“We will try to differentiate ourselves by targeting the premium market in the face of the arrival of global furniture giant Ikea,” said Hanssem chairman Choi Yang-ha.
