Bharti revives Aeon talks

Indian company Bharti Enterprises is reportedly reviving discussions with Japanese retailer Aeon now that French retailer Carrefour has dropped out of talks to form a joint venture.

The speculation was strengthened by confirmation Aeon executives have visited Bharti’s office and stores in Gurgaon.

“The signal we have been getting is we need to grow the business for which we will take money from any credible source,” said an executive at the Indian company.

Bharti has been seeking foreign partner since its six-year joint venture with Walmart ended in October.

Local peer Trent has partnered with British retailer Tesco, agreeing to develop the ‘Star Bazaar’ and ‘Star Daily’ stores in south and west India.
