Gap set to enter India

American clothing retailer Gap could open its first store in India early next year.

Gap is said to be in advanced discussions with Indian company Arvind to develop the retailer’s brands in India.

“It is more or less a done deal and will be announced in a week or 10 days,” said a person familiar with the development.

“Initially Arvind will run the stores, but Gap will be very much involved. The business will be structured in a manner that Gap will have say in real estate, look of the stores and the merchandise. Gap will control all aspects of the operation,” another source added.

Arvind is reportedly scouting for locations where it could open stores.

The company’s portfolio of brands include Tommy Hilfiger, US Polo Assn, Elle, Geoffrey Beene and Arrow.
