Chinese airport expands duty free offer

Haikou Meilan Airport in Hainan Province, China is expanding its duty free area to accommodate more brands.

The airport’s total duty free space will increase to 6000 sqm, anticipating new brands such as Michael Kors, Hugo Boss, Samsonite and Pandora.

“Meilan Airport plans to introduce more international premium brands to further improve its influence. Therefore, we have decided to expand our duty free shop by 1000 sqm to include more international brands,” said Hainan Meilan International Airport Company VP Yang Xuqiang.

The F&B line-up will see more local chains, in addition to the recently opened global chains like Burger King and Starbucks.

The airport expects retail sales to hit RMB1 billion (US$161 million) by the end of the year.
