Search engine launches grocery e-store

Junglee.com – the Indian search engine owned by Amazon – has launched an online gourmet grocery store aimed at helping shoppers find hard-to-find foods.

In practice, the ‘store’ is more of a refined search engine, aggregating products offered by some 180 existing online retailers across India.

The virtual store will stock more than 36,000 products sourced from both India and internationally, with a special focus on ethnic foods.

Items range from tea, coffee, snacks, candies and sweets to cereals and condiments, according to a press release from the company.

“Online grocery shopping in India is very nascent and we see potential in it, particularly for niche products like gourmet, organic food and specialty products which are not easily available,” said Mahendra Nerurkar, GM of Junglee.com.

“With this launch, Junglee.com will now be the new destination for foodies and gourmet cuisine lovers across the country as we are trying take convenience to the next level by giving customers easy access to these products.”

E-tailers to register on Junglee.com include GourmetCo.in, Foodesto, La Bottega del Gusto, The French Loaf, Haldirams, Coke2Home and Paperboat Drinks.

“The initial response from Junglee has been very encouraging. Junglee is a great cost-effective channel to reach our target audience and we look forward to working closely with the Junglee team to get more traction,” said  Neerja Mittersain, Founder, GourmetCo.in.
